The number 1729 is known as the Hardy–Ramanujan number after a famous anecdote of the British mathematician G. H. Hardy regarding a visit to the hospital to see Ramanujan. In Hardy's words:
“ | I remember once going to see him when he was ill at Putney. I had ridden in taxi cab number 1729 and remarked that the number seemed to me rather a dull one, and that I hoped it was not an unfavorable omen. "No," he replied, "it is a very interesting number; it is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways." | ” |
The two different ways are
- 1729 = 13 + 123 = 93 + 103
- The students on the left are some of our little Ramanujans at Magnolia Science Academy Santa Clara :) Math is one of their best friends, and they are not afraid of receiving math problems, because they enjoy trying to find the solutions instead.
They are students who love math and spend extra hours to solve problems after completing their daily homework. They just advanced to the Math Counts state competition last week (this is only the second year of Ramanujan Program), and right now, they study about 40 hours a week to improve their problem solving skills as a team.
Many thanks to our great students and teachers for their endless efforts and to parents for their constant support. And, we would like to give a special thanks to Dr.Gurel, our coach, "who took the natural raw talent of the students and shaped it in the furnace of hard work with his experience" (Mrs.Visa)
